In The Beginning

I started training in Kung Fu San Soo back in 1993. At that time, I had been a Certified Personal Trainer for 13 years, starting back in 1980, so I felt that I was in pretty good shape when I joined Kung Fu San Soo.

My intitial training consisted of learning the fundamentals of Kung Fu such as, proper stances, striking power and balance techniques. In San Soo, we practice on each other using slow techniques; learning to strike our targets accurately as well as learning to positioning of our bodies to create maximum leverage and power. My early training went very well for me. I was hungry for knowledge in this Art and was gobbling it up as fast as I could get it.

When my first promotion time came, I was required to show the techniques I had learn to the public. We are required to fight in a controlled manner for 3 to 5 minutes without a break. This can be a very long time to workout, especially when your adrenaline is pumping in front of the public. Needless to say, I WAS VERY WINDED by this, even though I was in good shape!

As the years progressed and my technique improved, my fighting abilities became more efficient. This caused the speed of my promotional workouts to increase, which challenged my cardio capacity even more. I was preparing for the promotions by using intense cardio training and free weight workouts but I still became very winded during the promotions.

I was working with a client at the time, in one of the local fitness centers, who was extremely under weight and weak, and decided to try an exercise combination I had used on myself some 20 years ago that added 25 pounds of muscle to my body on just over a year.

It is called the "Squat/Pullover Superset Combination" and is very intense when done correctly. This exercise combination not only added 10 pounds of muscle to my client in 7 weeks, he also became extremely strong. But, the thing that I noticed the most was that it increased his stamina by 1000%.

After about 3 weeks my strength and size dramatically increased just as I expected it would AND my cardio capacity WENT RIGHT THROUGH THE ROOF! The test came at my next promotion where I proceeded to fight for 5 straight minutes and barely scratched the surface of my cardio capacity.
